About the Ontario G1 test
The G1 is the first stage of Ontario’s graduated licensing system. Every new driver in the province starts here, and the written knowledge test is the only thing standing between you and a licence you can actually learn to drive on. Everything on it comes from a single document — the official MTO Driver’s Handbook — which is why targeted practice works so well for this particular exam.
What is on the Ontario G1 knowledge test?
The G1 knowledge test has two sections of 20 multiple-choice questions each: one on road signs and one on the rules of the road. You need at least 16 correct in each section to pass. Both sections are drawn from the official MTO Driver's Handbook.
How many questions do you need to get right to pass the G1?
You must answer at least 16 of 20 questions correctly in the signs section and 16 of 20 in the rules section. Passing one section but not the other means you only need to retake the section you failed.
Is there a time limit on the G1 test?
No. The Ontario G1 knowledge test is untimed, so you can work through the questions at your own pace.
How old do you have to be to get a G1 licence in Ontario?
You must be at least 16 years old. You will also need to pass a vision test and present acceptable identification at a DriveTest centre.
What can you do with a G1 licence?
A G1 driver must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least four years of driving experience whose blood alcohol level is under 0.05. The G1 driver's own blood alcohol level must be zero, every passenger must have a working seatbelt, and driving is not permitted between midnight and 5 a.m. or on 400-series highways and certain high-speed expressways unless accompanied by a licensed driving instructor.
How long is a G1 licence valid?
A G1 licence is valid for five years. Within that time you need to pass the G2 road test to move to the next level of Ontario's graduated licensing system.
